A Step-By-Step Look at the Process for Getting Veneers

Your smile is often the first feature that strangers will notice about you—which is perhaps why these days, more people than ever before are turning toward cosmetic dentistry to unlock their smile’s fullest potential. In fact, according to the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, the demand for cosmetic dental work has practically doubled within the last five years! And one way that people are enhancing their pearly whites is with the help of porcelain veneers. Keep reading to learn more about veneers and the steps involved in the procedure.

Step #1. Initial Consultation

Just like with any other type of dental service, meeting with your dentist for a consultation is the first logical step. This way, you can discuss your desired smile goals with your dentist and give them an idea of what you’re trying to accomplish—and they can inform you about whether it’s realistic or not. For example, if you want veneers, the affected teeth must have enough healthy enamel to support them, and patients should also have adequate oral health in general. It’s also worth noting the limitations of veneers—while notably versatile, they might not be able to help in some complex cases.

Step #2. Teeth Preparation

Once you’ve been cleared for veneers, your dentist will begin carrying out your customized treatment plan, and this begins with preparing your teeth for treatment. In order for the veneers to lay flush against your teeth and blend in seamlessly, a small amount of enamel needs to be removed—but rest assured, this amount is so small that it’s nothing to worry about, and your mouth will also be numbed. Note that this also means the teeth in question will always need to be covered with veneers moving forward.

Step #3. Veneer Creation

Your dentist will take impressions of your teeth that are used to make your veneers; they’re sent to a lab where technicians work diligently to craft them as per the requested specifications. While your veneers are being made, you’ll wear temporary ones to protect your teeth—this step also serves as a “test drive” for your new smile and ensures that your daily routine isn’t heavily impacted.

Step #4. Wrapping Up

Once your veneers are finished, they’re sent back to your dentist for the final step: placement! Using a special bonding method and materials, the veneers are firmly adhered to the teeth. If necessary, your dentist will also make any last-minute adjustments to ensure everything looks and feels natural. Once they’ve been bonded, you’ll immediately notice a new and improved smile upon looking in the mirror!
