If you have dentures, you’re probably thrilled to have a fully functional smile once more! However, whether you’ve just received your restorations or you’ve had them for quite some time, denture sores are a real possibility. But what causes these sores and what can you do to address them? Here’s what your dentist in Murphy wants you to know!

What Causes Denture Sores?

Denture sores occur for a variety of reasons, but most of the time, any pain or discomfort can be attributed to new or ill-fitting dentures. This is because it takes patients time to become accustomed to wearing dentures, so some irritation is expected. The restorations press against the nerves on your gum tissues, resulting in soreness after you’ve worn them for a while.

How Can I Address Denture Sores?

Needless to say, you should want to relieve any discomfort you’re feeling as a result of your dentures. Over-the-counter pain relievers are one excellent choice, as is a numbing gel that can be applied directly to any sore spots. You might also consider saltwater rinses; these encourage healing inside of your mouth and also reduce inflammation. Simply combine ¼ cup of warm water with ¼ teaspoon of salt, swish it around your mouth for 30 seconds, and then spit.

You can also give your mouth a break from wearing your dentures by taking them out before going to bed every night. This is also a good chance to soak your dentures in an appropriate solution; by doing so, you can easily keep them clean—which will further benefit your oral health and reduce the likelihood of sores causing serious issues for you. On that note, oral hygiene is crucial too, so also be sure that you’re brushing your dentures as instructed and cleaning your gums with a wet washcloth.

When Should I Call My Dentist?

Dentures sores aren’t something that you need to panic about; however, they also do not need to be endured pointlessly! If you suspect your dentures are ill-fitting and it’s resulting in denture sores, you should contact your dentist in addition to trying to alleviate your discomfort at home. Ill-fitting dentures are not going to correct themselves, but your dentist can easily make necessary adjustments that will ensure their continued functionality and also help to prevent them from causing irritation inside your mouth. If there is something else going on that’s causing the issue, your provider will be able to easily scope it out and prescribe an appropriate treatment.
