Oral Conscious Sedation – Murphy, TX

Get the Care You Need Without the Stress

Feeling nervous about visiting the dentist is a relatively common fear. However, if you start to avoid seeing your dentist and getting the care you need because of it, you may have a more pronounced case of dental anxiety. At Murphy Family Dental, we want to make keeping a happy, healthy smile a pleasant experience for everyone! That’s why we’re proud to offer sedation dentistry options like oral conscious sedation. This safe and reliable method could be the solution you’re looking for to get the care you need without the stress.

What Is Oral Conscious Sedation?

When you think about it, oral conscious sedation is exactly what its name suggests. This method involves taking an antianxiety medication by mouth (oral) before your visit to calm your nerves. When it’s time for your appointment, you’ll be very relaxed, calm, and drowsy. While you may not remember anything of your treatment afterwards, you’ll be awake throughout your entire appointment (conscious). This sedation option is more powerful than nitrous oxide, but it doesn’t sedate the patient quite as much as IV sedation.

What Can I Expect from Oral Conscious Sedation?

First, your Murphy sedation dentist will prescribe you a dose of antianxiety medication based on your level of anxiety and health. About an hour before your appointment, you’ll take the medication and you’ll gradually start to feel at-ease. By the time a friend or family member drives you to our office and you settle into the dental chair, you’ll be feeling extremely relaxed.

All throughout your treatment, we’ll keep a close eye on your vital signs to ensure you’re safe and comfortable. You will be oblivious to all the sights, sounds, and feelings that would normally cause you anxiety during your treatment. Some patients will even drift off to sleep during their procedure, but they can easily be awakened if needed. The effects of your sedation will begin to wear off once your treatment is over, but you will still feel quite groggy. Plan to have someone take you home where you can relax for the rest of the day.

Is Oral Conscious Sedation Right for Me?

Before your appointment, Dr. Nguyen or Dr. Najari will review your medical history, list of medications you’re taking, and your level of dental anxiety to ensure oral conscious sedation is right for you. In most cases, this method is a good choice for patients who:

  • Are living with dental pain because they’re too nervous to visit the dentist.
  • Tend to cancel their upcoming appointments out of fear.
  • Have trouble numbing with local anesthetic.
  • Want a deeper level of sedation than what nitrous oxide can provide.
  • Can’t stand the sights, sounds, or smells of the dental office.
  • Have sensitive teeth, an overactive gag reflex, jaw issues, or neck, back, or spine problems that make sitting in the dental chair uncomfortable.
  • Are afraid of needles or masks.
  • Are having multiple or invasive treatments completed.

Oral conscious sedation can help you overcome your dental anxiety and achieve the happy, healthy smile you deserve! To see if this sedation option is right for you, give us a call or contact us online.
