Oral cancer screening truly saves lives: The power of early detection

Not unlike other cancers, oral cancer can be challenging to treat after it has spread. Fortunately, there are many opportunities for Murphy Family Implant and Cosmetic Dentistry to catch pre-cancers and localized, early-stage cancerous lesions. Our dentists, Dr. Masoud E. Najari and Dr. Jacqueline T. Nguyen integrate oral cancer screening into initial exams and routine check-ups at least once every six months. We say at least every six months because if you are at risk of developing oral cancer, our team will want to see you on a more frequent basis.

Am I at risk?

Risk factors include tobacco use and excessive alcohol consumption. You are particularly at risk if you engage in both activities. Our team encourages everyone to be screened regularly. It is not an overstatement to say that early detection can be a lifesaver.

What are some red flags for oral cancer?

It is important to tell us about any changes you have experienced, such as problems with swallowing and frequent sore throats or hoarseness. Our dentists will also check for crusty, bleeding sores that seem never to heal and strange lumps, swelling, and red or white patches during your screening.

What else can I expect during my screening?

We will also visually inspect for things like facial asymmetry or drooping. We will feel for any lumps and other abnormalities by touching your mouth and outside your face, such as on your neck and along your jawline. We’ll also assess proper tongue movement. As needed, we can use our advanced diagnostics to detect what can’t be seen with our eyes alone. A small tissue sample may be taken for further evaluation, and it may be necessary to refer you to a specialist, depending on what we find.

What can we do to prevent this cancer?

We understand that some risk factors are not controllable. But Murphy Family Implant and Cosmetic Dentistry believes in controlling what you can. Notably, the use of tobacco or nicotine-containing products should be minimized and ultimately avoided entirely for the oral health. No matter your unique risk factors, call our Murphy, TX office today at (972) 808-5023. Book Now Your safety, health, and happiness are our priority.
