Why is it called “laughing gas”? Frequently Asked Questions about Relaxing Nitrous Oxide

You likely know of “nitrous oxide.” Only you may know it by its “household” name: “laughing gas.” True to its nickname, nitrous oxide is something to welcome and smile about. It is the most minimal form of sedation available at Murphy Family Implant and Cosmetic Dentistry. However, that doesn’t make it any less powerful as a way to help patients relax when visiting our office in Murphy, Texas. In fact, its strength is in its ability to ease dental apprehension and anxiety while presenting a low-risk sedative method – it is even safe for our pediatric patients!

What is nitrous oxide?

Nitrous oxide is a mild, light, and gentle form of sedation. Other forms of sedation induce deeper relaxation, but they are not appropriate for everyone. These alternatives include oral conscious sedation and intravenous (IV) sedation.

Why is it called “laughing gas”?

Nitrous oxide is known for inducing a state of euphoria. So, it can take you from feeling worried or anxious about a procedure or service to feeling like you don’t have a care in the world. You may even find things a little funny. Imagine being able to laugh in the face of what might otherwise be scary to you. That’s what “laughing gas” does, contributing to a much more pleasant experience than you might have without it as a patient with dental fear or anxiety.

How does it work?

This odorless gas is inhaled through a small nasal mask to induce a state of calm. This form of sedation can be adjusted easily and quickly, allowing for the most personalized treatment. Once you are at ease, we can begin your service or treatment. You will remain awake and able to communicate with us, but you won’t care about the treatment or your surroundings. This feature can also help us perform treatments more quickly and safely, as anxious patients may fidget and require frequent breaks.

What can I expect afterward?

Nitrous oxide is a “short-acting” sedative. Most patients can drive themselves home without arranging alternative transportation as long as we have assured that the sedative’s effects have worn off completely.

Is nitrous oxide only for patients who are scared of the dentist?

For starters, we cannot overemphasize how common dental fear is and that this is a judgment-free zone. At Murphy Family Implant and Cosmetic Dentistry, we are here to help our valued friends and neighbors. With that being said, there are other applications that also represent potential challenges to effective, efficient, safe, and comfortable dental care. So, you may also be a good candidate for sedation dentistry if you have conditions like very sensitive teeth and gums or a bad gag reflex. Our dentists also use sedation when performing complex and multi-faceted procedures that may require lengthy treatment and an extended time “chairside.”
