woman with zoom whitened teethEver gotten an unexpected close-up look at the color of your teeth in broad daylight? It can be quite a surprise to see what your friends see. With all the holiday parties and family photos you’ve got planned, you don’t have time for the at-home whitening kits that take weeks. And Zoom in-office teeth whitening sounds fast, but you don’t have a cosmetic dentist in Murphy.

If you’re not sure where to begin – and quickly finish – your whitening journey, start with these five questions for the fastest route to a brilliant, holiday-worthy smile.

Do I need to see a special cosmetic dentist for tooth whitening?

Many dentists specialize in multiple types of dentistry and offer whitening and other cosmetic treatments along with their preventive and restorative care. Your family dentist most likely offers Zoom whitening.

Can I get a free consultation before I commit to a whitening treatment?

When you call to set up an appointment, ask about free consultations. Many dentists offer them for new patients who aren’t sure what treatment they need. This is important because not everyone is a good candidate for Zoom whitening and the dentist will be able to tell you what you can expect.

Are there other procedures required before a whitening treatment?

The dentist will recommend that you have a comprehensive examination of your teeth and gums as well as a cleaning before having your teeth whitened. Clean teeth provide the best results and you may have other dental conditions that should be addressed before whitening is recommended, such as soft enamel or a dental abscess.

What is the Zoom process like?

The Zoom procedure itself takes less than an hour. The dentist will cover your lips and gums to protect them from the whitening gel, then apply the gel to the teeth. The Zoom light is focused on your teeth for 15 minutes to activate the gel to break up stains and discoloration.

This process is repeated two additional times, for a total of 45 minutes. Finally, a fluoride gel is applied to the teeth to minimize any short-term sensitivity the whitening may cause.

Is the Zoom treatment comfortable?

The treatment itself is not painful and most patients find it easy. The Zoom light may be uncomfortably warm, and some patients experience momentary tingling immediately following the treatment. Patients with a strong gag reflex or anxiety in the dental chair may experience difficulties. Your dentist will be able to address your concerns and help you feel comfortable throughout the procedure.

I’m ready to get started!

There’s no time like the present. Many people enjoy the benefits of Zoom whitening and it could be the best holiday gift you’ve ever given yourself. Once your dentist makes sure it’s the best decision for you, you’ll be on your way smiling in no time, enjoying the Lights at Legacy and other seasonal events.
