Your dentist in Murphy for National Brush Day.This week, we have a lot to celebrate with Halloween. However, as a dentist in Murphy, we have another day to celebrate—National Brush Day. After a day of indulging on candy and sweets, November 1st is dedicated to ensuring kids brush their teeth for two minutes twice a day. As Halloween comes to an end, use National Brush Day to instill the importance of oral hygiene with your children.

National Brush Day

Cavities are the top dental problem treated in children. Often, children develop cavities due to lack of proper brushing and flossing. When poor oral hygiene habits are combined with sugary foods, the risk for cavity development significantly increases. Since Halloween largely includes candy and sweets, the day after is the ideal time to teach children the importance of proper oral hygiene.

The Ad Council and the Partnership for Healthy Mouths, Healthy Lives has dedicated November 1st as National Brush Day to teach children the importance of oral hygiene after enjoying a day of treats. The core mission behind the day is to ensure children are properly brushing their teeth to prevent tooth decay.

How to Properly Brush Teeth

In order for brushing to be effective for creating healthy smiles, it must be done correctly. Learning how to properly brush the teeth is a lifelong skill as your children will be brushing their teeth for many, many years to come. With the right foundation of proper brushing, you will help to ensure a lifetime of healthy smiles.

Children need to learn how to properly brush their teeth with a soft-bristled toothbrush. Using a fluoride toothpaste, the toothbrush should be held at a 45-degree angle to the gum line. Using gentle back-and-forth motions, all of the surfaces of the teeth should be brushed. This includes the inner surfaces and chewing surfaces of the teeth. In addition to brushing their teeth, they also need to brush their tongue. While children often rush through brushing, they need to learn to brush for at least two minutes two times per day.

Oral Hygiene for a Healthy Smile

Your children also need to learn to floss their teeth each day. Flossing removes the plaque and bacteria left behind from brushing. Using about 18 inches of floss, teach your children to gently insert the floss between two teeth. Then, form a “C” shape around the tooth and slide the floss to the gum line and back up to the top of the tooth. This process needs to be repeated for each tooth.

With the right home care, you will help to promote a life-time of healthy oral habits to protect your child’s smile from damage both today and in the future. With a strong foundation to oral hygiene as a child, they are more likely to continue to make oral health a priority.

As your dentist for healthy smiles, we encourage you to use National Brush Day to teach your children proper oral hygiene habits. In addition to home care, make sure they visit the dentist twice a year for regular checkups and cleanings.
